Lesson; What do you see?

Objective: To find out what preconceived ideas children have about people, a place, or a topic.

Preparation: Prepare a Power Point slide show or set of pictures that show images of a group of people, a place or topic that challenge stereotypes.

Examples:

Before a study of Africa show pictures that show a range of images from rainforest, tribal people, people in contemporary dress, modern cities, etc.

Before a study of Native Americans show a range of images that include both historical and contemporary life.

Procedure: Show the pictures or PowerPoint show to the class and have them write down or indicate in some way if they think the picture shows that group of people, the place or the topic. Then repeat the show pointing out which pictures are true and which are false.

Follow Up Discussion Question: Why was it hard to know which pictures were true? Where do we get our ideas about _______? Do you think everyone has stereotyped ideas about unfamiliar places, people, and topics?
