Spreading Kindness: A Research Report on Good Deeds
by Joan Koster
Acts of kindness make people feel good, but they also make other people act more kindly. A new study done by researchers at Stanford University found that people who watched people being kind on a video clip ( in this case musicians thanking their teachers on an Oprah Winfry segment) were more likely to volunteer to be in another psychology study than those who watched neutral clips of nature or comedy.
In another experiment using the same clips, participants who watched the good deed clip were more likely to help an individual who was having "trouble" using a computer.
Remember now that these were people who had only watched goodness being shown on a brief TV clip. So even though this is just one study and the results need further investigation what are some implications for teachers and parents?.
1. Role modeling is important if we want children to be kinder.
2. We should fight for more TV shows and advertisements that show people doing good things - not violence.
3. Acts of Kindness activities should make a difference in how children behave.
