8 Steps to Becoming an Anti-Racist Educator

Be alert for bias. Examine your own beliefs about race and cultural differences regularly. Listen “beneath the words” when others speak.

Confront your biases and social position. Recognize your own biases and privileges and be willing to confront the issues these cause.

Learn where your beliefs come from. Study your own cultural background and family history, and share what you learn with your students.

Become a role model. Model anti-racist attitudes and actions for your students and colleagues.

Learn more. Expand your understanding of other cultures and races through reading books, and studying art and music.

Take charge. Understand that it is your job to address issues of race and culture with your students.

Make friends. Find and develop professional relationships with other anti-racists, and colleagues and students of color.

Persevere. Don’t let the lack of interest or cynicism of others, including fellow teachers, stop you from taking action.
